Training to become a Patent Attorney in Germany

With a university degree in sciences (biology, chemistry, physics,…) or engineering and with at least 1 year of professional experience in any field of technology you can start the 3-year training to become a German and European patent attorney.

Training as a German Patent Attorney

The training stages as a patent attorney candidate in Germany are at a patent attorney firm (about 2 years), at the German Patent and Trademark Office / DPMA (for 2 months) and at the Federal Patent Court (for 6 months). In addition, you need to attend a distance learning program at the Distance Learning University of Hagen.

In the day-to-day business it is about IP prosecution and IP litigation (patents, trademarks and designs) and, amongst other things about the management of patent portfolios, licencing agreements and employee invention law.

Training as a European Patent Attorney

When successfully passing the second exam to become a European patent attorney, you can also represent clients before the European Patent Office (EPO). For further information please visit: German Chamber of Patent Attorneys (Patentanwaltskammer).
